Kenilworth Station was officially reopened on July 20th, 2018, after a plaque was unveiled by the Secretary of State for Transport, the Right Honourable Chris Grayling MP.

The station was opened to the public for the first time in over 50 years in April after the completion of the design and construction by GRAHAM.

Mr Grayling was joined by the MP for Kenilworth and Southam, Rt Hon Jeremy Wright and Cllr Peter Butlin and Monica Fogarty from Warwickshire County Council.

The ceremony paid tribute to all the partners involved in the scheme, with representatives from Coventry and Warwickshire Local Enterprise Partnership, Network Rail, West Midlands Trains and West Midlands Rail all present.

Indeed, Network Rail’s Senior Scheme Sponsor, Simon Clifford, described the new station as ‘outstanding’ and said that it was a ‘pleasure to work with all our partners on this project’.

The long-awaited multi-million pound transformation project now provides a new hourly train service – enabling connections at Coventry to and from the north of the County, Birmingham and London and also connections from Leamington Spa to London and the Thames Valley.

Not only will it improve rail link and passenger services it will also deliver wider economic benefits to Kenilworth and the wider community.

The project involved the construction of new platforms, a new station building, cycle sheds, two lifts and a footbridge. Additionally, a new car park and bus stop/turning facility were constructed.

GRAHAM delivered much of the project during nightly possessions when train services were not running.

Commenting on the scheme, GRAHAM’s Rail Director, Jonny Kerr, said:

“It was a privilege to be here today, on behalf of GRAHAM, at the official opening of Kenilworth Railway Station. As the principal contractor, this is a project that we are immensely proud of and we recognise its strategic importance for the people of Kenilworth and the wider benefits that it will deliver.

“The team has produced a high-quality design in keeping with the historical approach for the new station. We have worked collaboratively with all local stakeholders, Network Rail and their contractors, and Warwickshire Council during the delivery of each phase of the works.

“Wherever possible, we minimised disruption and we carried out possessions during Rules of the Route (ROTR) overnight, with the team adopting an efficient approach working in consultation with key stakeholders to ensure that we delivered all of the works in a safe and timely manner while mitigating the impact on the local residents.”
