Project summary

We have been appointed as the contractor for the new eye-catching modern office development, i9, set in the heart of the City of Wolverhampton Interchange. The stylish three cornered building is set in a prime location strategically positioned between the railway station and civic core. i9 emerged as a scheme following the success of the award-winning i10 complex on the opposite side of the road. It is an integral part of the wider redevelopment of £132m Interchange project, the development will be built upon a 6 storey reinforced concrete frame on piled foundations. The façade will be manufactured using off-site methods, precast concrete brick façade panels with windows installed in the factory and hoisted into position as completed elements. The new office is set to achieve a BREEAM ‘excellent’ rating and incorporate the latest green technology and thinking to deliver low energy use, low resource use, flexibility and low impact on the surrounding environment.

The detail

The design, by Glenn Howells Architects, pays homage to the industrial characteristics of Wolverhampton’s red-brick Victorian architecture with bull-nose, curved glass corners addressing key approaches and deep brickwork piers helping to shade the building and articulate its tripartite proportions. The strong vertical expression of brickwork piers creates a striking yet complimentary addition to the family of buildings at this important intersection which includes the Grade II listed Chubb Building and Prince Albert public house.

“It is great to see full works starting on the spectacular i9 building at heart of the city’s Interchange. We want this building to become the design and quality benchmark for future developments in the city and to demonstrate our ambition for the city centre"
